What Are Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures?
Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures involve the use of small incisions, image guidance, and specialized tools to access and treat the spine with minimal disruption to surrounding tissues. These techniques reduce trauma, speed up recovery, and lower the risk of complications. They are ideal for patients with spine-related pain who haven’t responded to conservative treatments like medications, physical therapy, or injections, but want to avoid major surgery. They relieve pressure or inflammation causing your pain and may prevent or prolong the need for more invasive surgeries.
Neuromodulation procedures, such as spinal cord stimulation and peripheral nerve stimulation, are evidence-based interventional pain management treatments that help address a wide range of spine and nerve-related conditions. These minimally invasive techniques impact how the nervous system sends pain signals, helping prevent the pain signal from reaching the brain and are used when more conservative treatments like injections do not provide long-term relief. With Spinal Cord Stimulation, a small generator implanted in the back sends mild electrical impulses to the spinal cord that interfere with the transmission of pain signals to the brain, masking your back, leg, or nerve pain.
Minimally Invasive Spine Procedures are commonly used to treat conditions like:
- Spinal Stenosis
- Degenerative Disc Disease
- Herniated Discs
- Facet Joint Pain
Sacroiliac (SI) Joint Dysfunction
Chronic Low Back Pain
- Post-Surgical Spine Pain (Failed Back Surgery Syndrome)
- Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CPRS)
- Peripheral Neuropathy or Diabetic Neuropathy
- Radiculopathy
- Nerve Pain Radiating from the Spine (Sciatica)
Our Treatment Offering
Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA)
Radiofrequency ablation is a procedure that uses heat generated by radio waves to target and disable nerves responsible for sending pain signals from the spine. RFA is often used for chronic pain in the neck, mid-back, or lower back.
The physician uses fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance) to place a specialized needle near the affected nerve. A small electrical current tests the nerve’s involvement in your pain. Then, heat is applied to interrupt the nerve’s ability to send pain signals. The procedure takes about 30 minutes.
Minimal downtime. Relief may begin within 1–3 weeks and last from six months to over a year.
Spinal Cord Stimulation
Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is a minimally invasive therapy used to manage chronic pain. It involves implanting a small device that delivers electrical impulses to the spinal cord. These impulses work by blocking pain signals from traveling to the brain, helping to reduce the perception of pain.
Most patients resume normal activity within days. Results are often immediate with increasing relief over time.
Peripheral Nerve Stimulation
Peripheral nerve stimulation (PNS) targets specific nerves outside the spinal cord that are responsible for localized pain. A small electrode is implanted near the affected nerve to deliver electrical signals, which disrupt pain signals and provide relief.
The system is either placed temporarily for a trial or implanted permanently, depending on your condition and goals.
Ideal for pain in areas like the back, shoulders, hips, or extremities. Offers a drug-free, surgery-free alternative.
Most patients return to normal activity quickly, with minimal downtime.
Minimally Invasive Lumbar Decompression (MILD)
The MILD procedure is a minimally invasive procedure to treat lumbar spinal stenosis (LSS) by removing excess bone or ligament tissue that compresses the spinal nerves. Performed through a small incision with specialized instruments, MILD helps relieve pressure and restore space within the spinal canal.
The physician uses imaging guidance to insert tools and remove the obstructing tissue. It typically takes 30–45 minutes.
Minimal recovery time with patients returning home the same day. Most patients resume light activity within a few days. Many experience improved mobility and reduced pain within a few weeks.
Minuteman
The Minuteman® procedure is a minimally invasive alternative to traditional spinal fusion for treating lower back pain caused by spinal instability, such as from spondylolisthesis or degenerative disc disease. It involves placing a small spacer implant between vertebrae to stabilize the spine and reduce painful motion.
The physician uses fluoroscopy (live X-ray guidance) to insert the Minuteman implant through a small lateral (side) incision without screws, rods, or large incisions. The device is positioned between the vertebrae and helps promote bone growth and long-term spinal stability. The procedure typically takes 30–60 minutes and is often performed under local anesthesia.
Patients typically go home the same day. Recovery is generally quicker and less painful than traditional spinal fusion, with many patients resuming light activities within a few days and experiencing pain relief within a few weeks.
Kyphoplasty
Kyphoplasty is a procedure designed to treat vertebral compression fractures – small cracks in the spine often caused by osteoporosis, injury, or cancer. The treatment aims to relieve pain, stabilize the fractured bone, and restore normal spinal alignment.
Using fluoroscopy (X-ray guidance), the physician inserts a needle into the fractured vertebra and inflates a small balloon to create space. That space is then filled with medical-grade bone cement, which quickly hardens to stabilize the bone. The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes per treated level.
Most patients go home the same day and can resume light activities within a day or two. Many experience significant pain relief within 24–48 hours and improved mobility soon after.
SI Joint Fusion
SI joint fusion is a surgical procedure that stabilizes the sacroiliac joint – the connection between the spine and pelvis – using a small implant. This treatment is ideal for patients with chronic SI joint pain that has not improved with injections or physical therapy.
A small incision is made, and implants are inserted to fuse the joint. The procedure is performed under image guidance and typically takes about an hour.
Minimal recovery time with patients returning home the same day. Most patients return to light activity in a few weeks, with progressive relief as the joint fuses and heals.
